Li Teng-Fang was once the wealthy gentry in Dasi. He participated at the provincial exam and passed in 1865; therefore, the original name of Dasi-“Da Gu Kan” was then changed to “Da Ke Kan” that showed his decisive role in that place at that time. Li Teng-Fang Historical Residence was established in 1860 for the purpose to show how proud he was for his exam results. The whole building was elaborate and gorgeous: huge amount of wood-carving sessions and the carving craftsmanship was the best of the best, especially the carving decorations at the lobby were the most marvelous art; moreover, abundant books and paintings along with other decorative subjects had showed the literati and officialdom’s style. Li Teng-Fang Historical Residence is the model to represent the monuments of residence type in Taoyuan County. The coiling Chi Hu arched to the center and formed a furnace shape in the middle; so detailed and vigorous, and possessing the messages of good luck, prosperity, exorcising evil spirits and longevity. Using utensils of “Chin,” “Chess,” “painting, pens” and “books, swords” as the subject matters, which have the meaning of possessing both literary and martial talents; the practice and force of carving are the highest quality of art. It was said that Liou Hai used the copper coin to fish the golden toad of three legs, symbolizing wealth. The Taiwanese homonyms of the toad sound the same as “bringing in wealth.” The golden toad represents huge income of financial resources and happiness. On the upper right corner, it was written “the magpie reporting Chun Kuei,” the good news of passing the governmental exams in the old time. In Chin Dynasty, the national exam was held in spring, so Chun (means spring) kuei implicated that one passed the exam and became a Jin Shi (a magistrate). Using characters as the subject matters, expressing one’s wishing with their connotations; meaning this magnificence of this object is the essence of all things, and the treasure of the nature. Hai Tang and Swallow,” “the chrysanthemum and sparrow;” Tang is similar to the sound of the hall and the chrysanthemum has the same pronunciation of “Ju” as residence. When the residence was just newly established and the swallows and sparrows came to congratulate, possessing the meaning of celebrating the new residence. One of Ciou Jhenbang’s colored drawings, with smooth lines and elegant and graceful colorings, his paintings possess a steady style of his own. The flagpole was a symbol of the status for those who had passed the provincial exam; the stone carvings surrounding the flagpole base at the outside yard represent the lucky pattern that pray for good luck and prosperity. Nan Yang Five Elderly were five refined scholars and they liked to gather together and discussed all things on earth and in heaven, from the old to now; implicating those refined scholars cared about the world. 《 Five Elderly Observing Tai Ji 》 Deng Biao with a nickname as Jhibo, together he, Zong Wubo, Di Jiaobo, Chen Sueibo and Jhang Dibo were called as “Nan Yang Five Elderly.” Because having the common interests, they liked to gather together and discuss the astronomy, Cin, chess, books and paintings; worth of the title of five refined scholars. Five Elderly observing the solar diagrams and discussing the natures of all things from the old till now; implicating those refined scholars cared about the world.
